Flights cancelled amid national strike across Italy

A national 24-hour general strike was called with potential disruptions across air travel, rail and local public transport.

Having started late on Thursday, it runs until 9pm, Friday night.

Travellers are being warned cities like Rome and Milan will likely experience the most disruption.

The national strike was called and coordinated by several trade unions.

Airport workers, including baggage handlers are participating in the strike.

Cancellations and heavy delays are likely for long-distance Frecce and Intercity trains as well as regional rail services.

However, Trenitalia essential services will operate at set times to offer a minimum service on certain routes.

ITA Airways already proactively cancelled 34 domestic and international flights. It expects more cancellations will be necessary.

Flights to and from Rome, Milan, and Bologna are expected to be hit hard while media suggest flight cancellations could be ‘across the board’ at some airport.

For now, airlines have advised booked passengers to check the latest update on their flight status before heading to the airport.
