Iceland, Singapore, and Denmark are the top 3 safest countries in the world to travel

Drawing from a wide range of reliable indicators, HelloSafe has published its 2025 Travel Safety Index. Scored on a 0 to 100 scale, the index assigns 100 to the least safe countries and 0 to the safest, offering a clear snapshot of each country’s current security situation. Here are the results—which sometimes challenge common assumptions!

According to data compiled in HelloSafe index, Iceland is currently the safest country in the world, with a score of 18.23 out of 100. It is followed by Singapore (19.99) and Denmark (20.05). Notably, 12 of the 15 safest countries in the world are located in Europe, including Switzerland, which ranks as the 5th safest country globally (20.51 points). Also featured in the top 15 are Bhutan (22.98 points) and Qatar (23.33 points), which stand out as highly secure destinations for travellers from a safety standpoint.

France ranks as the 4th least safe European country to travel in 2024

Overall, Europe remains the world’s safest continent for travellers. In fact, European countries hold 30 of the top 50 safest spots globally, including Switzerland (5th in the world, 4th in Europe, index score of 20.51), the Netherlands (20th worldwide, 17th in Europe, 26.22), and Belgium (31st worldwide, 24th in Europe, 28.31).

Worth noting is France’s lower ranking—only 80th globally and 34th in Europe, with an index score of 36 points. France stands now behind Spain and Italy in Europe, both countries showing a respective index store of 32 and 33.

This position is largely explained by the ongoing terrorism threat, which continues to weigh heavily on the country. At the bottom of the rankings are Ukraine and Russia, both deeply impacted by the conflict between the two countries that has persisted since 2022.

Paraguay and Uruguay: the two safest countries in Latin America

Latin America has long been considered an exotic travel destination for visitors from Europe and North America. However, safety conditions vary sharply across the region. Countries such as Paraguay, Uruguay, Trinidad and Tobago, and Bolivia currently show relatively strong safety index scores for travellers.

By contrast, Colombia, Mexico, and Venezuela rank among the most dangerous Latin American countries. High homicide rates, increased militarization, internal displacement, and ongoing security challenges are among the primary factors behind these lower rankings—despite these countries’ undeniable tourism potential.
