Lufthansa modernises Business Class of its Airbus A380

As part of the program, both the Boeing 747-8 and Airbus A350-900 will also receive new seats across all travel classes.

Launching the conversion initiative—known in aviation as a “retrofit”—Lufthansa will begin upgrading its Airbus A380-800 fleet with new Business Class seating starting in February. Additional aircraft in the existing fleet will follow shortly thereafter.

Lufthansa A380 will be fitted with Business Class seats supplied by Thompson. Each seat will feature direct aisle access, a width of 58 centimeters, a bed length of at least two meters, Bluetooth connectivity, and adjustable partitions designed to enhance both comfort and privacy, elevating the premium travel experience.

Because the new cabin layout is already certified, Lufthansa will not require a lengthy regulatory approval process. This allows the airline to introduce the upgraded Business Class on its A380 aircraft within just a few weeks.

Heiko Reitz, Hub Manager Munich at Lufthansa Airlines, said the investment highlights the airline’s long-term commitment to premium long-haul travel. “Lufthansa operates the only substantial A380 fleet in the European Union, based at our five-star hub in Munich,” Reitz said. “This retrofit reinforces our goal of delivering an outstanding flight experience on an aircraft that remains extremely popular with our customers. The new premium seats provide significantly greater comfort and privacy. We look forward to welcoming passengers to the upgraded Business Class starting in April.”

Once the retrofit is complete, each A380 will be equipped with 68 new Business Class seats. The aircraft will also feature eight First Class seats, 52 Premium Economy seats, and 371 Economy seats, making the A380 the largest long-haul aircraft in Lufthansa’s fleet.

In addition to the cabin upgrades, the aircraft will undergo scheduled maintenance. Following completion of the checks, the first retrofitted A380 is expected to return to Munich in April and enter regular service. Lufthansa plans to complete the retrofit of all eight A380 aircraft by mid-2027.
