Newark Airport flight cuts take effect

Flight volume is now reduced to 56 hourly operations until June 15, 2025, down from 77.

It follows many days of flight disruptions and serious communication failures, caused by equipment failures and short staffing.

Last week the FAA met with airlines to address the flight disruption at Newark.

It has seen hundreds of flight delays and cancelations.

“Our goal is to relieve the substantial inconvenience to the traveling public from excessive flight delays due to construction, staffing challenges, and recent equipment issues,” said Acting FAA Administrator Chris Rocheleau.

The FAA said the current operational limits may change if conditions improve.

The agency discussed the matter with United Airlines, Delta, JetBlue, American Airlines, Alaska Airlines, Spirit and Allegiant Air.

After June 15, when daily runway construction ends, flight capacity will rise slightly.

The FAA is increasing air traffic controller staffing overseeing Newark flight operations.
