Newcastle Airport hails busiest summer ever

Newcastle Airport Newcastle Airport has enjoyed its busiest summer holiday season ever, handling 1.3 million passengers.

It marked a 5% rise in passenger numbers.

The airport says there has been increased demand on international routes with four new destinations added.

Nick Jones, CEO at Newcastle Airport, said: “We are proud to have recorded our busiest summer ever at Newcastle Airport, partnering with new airlines and launching exciting new destinations.”

New routes included Copenhagen, Berlin, Guernsey, and Agadir.

Flights to holiday hostspots Ibiza, Barcelona, Antalya, and Dalaman were among the most popular.

Despite the record numbers, the airport says 99% of passengers cleared security screening in under 10 minutes.

Looking ahead, Ryanair will base a third aircraft at Newcastle this winter and introduce new flights to Brussels, Budapest, Gdansk, Wroclaw and Malta.
