UAE and Bahrain roll out biometric ‘single travel point’ to cut airport queues

Bahrain Airport 2024 The UAE and Bahrain have launched a pilot “single travel point” initiative designed to streamline cross-border air travel using biometric technology and digital data sharing, in a move expected to reduce airport queues and improve passenger flow.

The new system allows Emirati and Bahraini travelers to complete entry and immigration formalities before departure, enabling faster arrivals with minimal processing on landing. Aviation authorities say the program represents a significant step toward seamless smart travel across the Gulf region.

The initiative is being implemented by the UAE’s Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security in partnership with Bahrain’s Ministry of Interior and the Gulf Cooperation Council Secretariat General. The first phase will operate between Zayed International Airport in Abu Dhabi and Bahrain International Airport.

Biometric pre-clearance to accelerate airport journeys
Passengers will use integrated digital platforms combining biometric verification, automated e-gates, and real-time data exchange between authorities. Secure pre-arrival sharing of traveler information is expected to reduce congestion, shorten wait times, and enhance border control efficiency.

Officials say the technology-driven approach not only improves passenger convenience but also strengthens security through more accurate identity checks. The system is designed to support growing travel demand while maintaining high safety standards.

Major General Suhail Saeed Al Khaili described the project as one of the Gulf’s most innovative mobility initiatives, reflecting a shared commitment to advanced digital infrastructure and regional cooperation.

Authorities believe the streamlined process will stimulate tourism growth, facilitate trade, and position both countries as leaders in next-generation aviation systems. The project highlights the deep strategic integration between the UAE and Bahrain, combining efficiency, security, and robust data protection.

Etihad Airways is among the first carriers involved in the pilot. Captain Majed Al Marzouqi, Chief Operations and Guest Experience Officer, said the initiative aligns with the airline’s strategy to enhance the passenger journey before boarding, allowing travellers to move seamlessly from departure to arrival.

Industry observers view the “single travel point” as a potential blueprint for wider smart mobility across the Gulf Cooperation Council, with future expansion to additional countries under consideration.
