Dubai Duty Free launches crypto payments at airports

Picture1 (24) Dubai Duty Free has become the first airport retailer in the Middle East to accept cryptocurrency payments, introducing Crypto.com Pay across its retail network at Dubai International Airport (DXB), Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC), and its online store.

The new payment option enables travellers to make purchases using supported cryptocurrencies through the Crypto.com App. In-store, customers simply scan a QR code at the checkout to complete their transaction. Online shoppers can also pay by scanning a QR code, while mobile users are redirected to the Crypto.com App to authorize the payment.

All transactions are processed through Crypto.com’s regulated payment infrastructure. Dubai Duty Free receives settlements instantly in UAE dirhams, eliminating cryptocurrency volatility and allowing the retailer to continue operating within its existing financial systems.

The move marks another step in Dubai’s ambition to become a global leader in digital payments and financial innovation. It supports the emirate’s Cashless Strategy, which targets 90% of all financial transactions being cashless by the end of 2026.

Dubai Duty Free serves millions of international travellers each year through its retail operations at Dubai’s two airports. The retailer generated record annual sales of more than AED 8 billion (US$2.2 billion) in 2025, making it one of the world’s largest single airport retail operators.

The introduction of cryptocurrency payments reflects growing demand for alternative payment methods among international travellers, particularly younger and tech-savvy consumers who increasingly use digital assets for everyday transactions.

By allowing cryptocurrency, Dubai Duty Free joins a small but growing number of global travel retailers embracing this virtual mean of payments. The system offers secure, contactless transactions while maintaining compliance with financial regulations.

The initiative further strengthens Dubai’s reputation as a hub for fintech and digital asset innovation. The emirate has actively encouraged blockchain and cryptocurrency businesses through supportive regulation and investment, positioning itself at the forefront of the digital economy.

For travellers, the addition of cryptocurrency payments provides another convenient way to shop at one of the world’s busiest
