The company has unveiled a mock-up of its future trains as it prepares to launch services between London and continental Europe by 2030. The project marks Virgin’s return to rail after its former UK domestic franchise ended in 2019.
Virgin has ordered 12 high-speed trains from French manufacturer Alstom, with customized interiors intended to draw on the group’s experience in airlines, hotels and cruises. The trains will be capable of reaching speeds of up to 300 km/h.
The layout is intended to move beyond conventional high-speed rail interiors. Virgin Atlantic’s Clubhouses will inspire social spaces where passengers can work, relax or meet fellow travelers, while Virgin Hotels will influence seating, comfort and the overall design. Food and drink will take cues from the menus and hospitality offered by Virgin Voyages.
Virgin has not yet disclosed the complete seating configuration, cabin classes or final onboard facilities. A bar is among the possibilities being discussed, but the operator has yet to confirm the details. The aim is to give travelers more flexibility and make the journey itself part of the experience.
The planned service will connect London with Paris, Brussels and Amsterdam, with up to 20 daily round trips envisaged. Virgin estimates that the operation could add almost 7.5 million seats annually to cross-Channel rail capacity.
The company is also exploring links between its rail and airline operations, potentially allowing passengers arriving in London on Virgin Atlantic flights to continue by train to continental destinations, while travelers from France could connect to the airline’s international network. Members of the Virgin Red loyalty program are also expected to earn and redeem points on journeys.
The launch remains a future ambition rather than an immediate change for travelers. Virgin has secured UK track access until at least 2040 and agreed to use Eurostar’s Temple Mills international depot in east London for train maintenance. The company says further details about its trains and customer experience will be released in the coming months.
